Why I Practice House Call Veterinary Medicine in Western North Carolina

I believe there is a better way to practice veterinary medicine. We can’t do everything in a home that we could in a clinic, but we can do most preventative care and education without a waiting room, the stress of a car ride, and an unfamiliar lobby before the exam even starts.

That belief got tested in the fall of 2024, when Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina. My practice partner, Dr. Parisi, and I volunteered at a pop-up emergency clinic in Swannanoa, one of the hardest-hit areas, right after the storm. Being able to offer free care and focus entirely on what the pet needed, not on what the family could afford, was some of the most meaningful medicine I’ve practiced. With support from a Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation / Petopia grant, we were able to carry that same approach into our everyday house call practice.

House Call Care for Asheville Retirement Communities

A lot of elderly pet parents have a hard time getting a pet into a clinic at all, and that’s exactly the gap a house call practice can fill. I’d like to build a stronger presence with communities like Deerfield and the Givens Estate for that reason. We offer predictable payments with Heal + to allow for budgeting without compromising on your pet’s care.

Regional Health Risks I Watch For in Western North Carolina

Tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease, are a real concern in this part of North Carolina, and leptospirosis is on my radar here as well. Both diseases can be prevented with vaccination and education. Prevention is a regular part of my wellness conversations, and it’s one of the things I’d rather talk through early than treat later.

How I Became an Asheville House Call Veterinarian

I’ve wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember. My dad was a physician, and growing up, veterinary medicine felt like the obvious version of that path for me. I was the kid trying to feed the strays in the neighborhood and take them inside.

I studied chemistry as an undergraduate with a minor in zoology. I like understanding why something happens and what it means, which is why I find medicine fascinating. That curiosity carried me through veterinary school at the University of Florida, where I met Dr. Parisi, and into nine years of small animal practice that included a rotating small animal internship.

How I Tailor Care to Each Pet in Their Own Home

Every pet is unique and deserves specially tailored care. That’s easier to do at home, where I can see how a pet actually lives instead of how they behave in an exam room. I’m especially suited to pet parents who feel insecure about the time, energy, or care they put into their pets. Most of the time they’re already doing what I would do – and hearing that from a vet matters.

I also keep my patients with me. I remember the ones I feel I failed, and I think about them when a similar case comes up.

The Senior, Palliative, and Feline Care I Provide in Asheville

My practice leans toward senior cats, senior dogs, and multi-cat households. Palliative care, senior care, and feline medicine are where I spend much of my time and where I feel most comfortable. House calls make a real difference for these patients with mobility issues or anxiety. They skip the wind-up of the car ride or carrier, they’re already comfortable in their own space, and they settle back into their normal routine quickly once the exam is done.

Hiking Asheville’s Trails With Trixie, my little mixed breed dog

I’m a self-proclaimed crazy cat lady, but on my days off you’ll usually find me out on a trail with my dog somewhere along the Blue Ridge Parkway, walking around a lake, or exploring one of the local parks.
